Convair SM-65 - The Atlas Missile
Convair SM-65 "Atlas"
The "Atlas", an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), was designed to lift a nuclear warhead into a ballistic trajectory for impact on an enemy target at least 5,000 miles distance. Flight tests began in June 1957, with the first full-range flight of more than 6,000 miles taking place on 28 November 1958. It is on display at the Air Force Museum, W-P AFB, Ohio. In addition to its ICBM role, the Atlas has been the "workhorse" of America's space efforts, including Project Mercury, the placing of astronauts into orbit around the earth.
