Space Shuttle Columbia launched on its 28th flight on January 16, 2003 with a crew of seven astronauts.  On February 1, 2003, Shuttle Columbia broke apart over Texas, 16 minutes before it was supposed to land in Florida.  All seven crew members were lost.

STS-5 Crew Insignia
This is the official crew patch for the fifth (note five points of star) NASA Space Transportation System (STS-5) flight.  The STS-5 mission was NASA's first operational STS flight following four successful test flights.  It called for the Columbia to be manned by four astronauts - a space agency first Crew members for the flight were Vance D. Brand, commander; Robert F. Overmyer, pilot; and William B. Lenoir and Joseph P. Allen, mission specialists.

The fourth orbiter to join the fleet, Atlantis was delivered to Kennedy Space Center April 13, 1985.  Atlantis would fly 33 missions and would travel more that 125,935,769 miles in space prior to its final landing July 21, 2011.

Following a precedent set early two decades ago during the Gemini program, three members of the STS-8 astronaut crew aboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Challenger reveal their military backgrounds and loyalties.  Astronauts (left to right) Dale A. Gardner, Richard H. Truly and Daniel C. Brandenstein leave no mystery as to their alma mater and grid-iron sentimentalities as they display U.S. Navy stickers.  The trio was photographed by Astronaut Guion S. Bluford on the flight deck.  Truly is crew commander; Brandenstein, Pilot; and Gardner and Bluford, along with Dr. William E. Thornton are all mission specialists for this six-day flight.

STS-41-B was the tenth NASA Space Shuttle mission and the fourth flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger. It launched on February 3, 1984, and landed on February 11 after deploying two communications satellites. It was also notable for including the first untethered spacewalk.
